Anti- Internet Gambling Crusader “Re- Energized” by Abramoff Scandal Rep. Robert W. Goodlatte's, a Republican from Virginia, said yesterday that he was “re-energized" in his efforts to ban internet casinos gambling after exposure of lobbyist Jack Abramoff’s attempts to sabotage former versions of his anti- internet casinos gambling bill. Many of Rep. Goodlatte’s counterparts in the House have expressed excitement at the opportunity that the lawmaker’s bill to ban internet casinos gambling represents. "Passing this bill will send a clear signal that the era of Jack Abramoff's influence on the U.S. House is over," Rep. John Shadegg, a Republican from Arizona, recently told reporters. Rep. Goodlatte’s proposal to ban internet casinos gambling back in 2000 failed to pass, although it won more than half of the legislators’ support. Rep. Goodlatte and his supporters now attribute this failure to the surreptitious efforts of Abramoff and the lawmakers he recruited to help him in his campaign. One of those lawmakers was the now- disgraced former House Majority Whip Tom DeLay, who stepped down from his post when his role in the internet casinos gambling scandal was exposed. "The efforts of Jack Abramoff and those on his behalf were largely responsible for widespread disinformation about [the internet casinos gambling] legislation," Goodlatte told reporters at a press conference.
